Starfish Project - Restoring Hope

Starfish Project

Starfish Project brings hope to exploited women in Asia by providing a dignified way to make a living. The artisans behind the beautiful hand-crafted pieces you'll find on Love Justly and at Starfish Project have left a life of abuse and entered a world of hope and redemption.

Purchase Provides Purpose
When you buy jewelry from Starfish Project you help women discover, sometimes for the first time, purpose and self-worth. Starfish Project provides new possibilities, healing, food, and shelter for woman rescued from sex trafficking and to many others still living in brothels in Asia.

Starfish Project

So many women have a new beginning through Starfish Project and it's all thanks to the vision of Jenny McGee. Jenny has created a non-profit where all profits from jewelry sales directly support women through holistic care and vocational training. Love Justly spoke with one of Jenny's colleagues Virginia Scharf, chief strategy officer for Starfish Project, about where the name comes from and a powerful story of hope.

Describe how Starfish Project got its name.
Jenny just loved the parable of the starfish. When we work in a country that has hundreds of thousands of victims, we can feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem. Trafficking, in general, has the ability to paralyze us because we feel so overwhelmed by the problem. Jenny took the name from the starfish parable because she loves the reminder that we can make a huge difference in the lives of individual people.

Starfish Project has so many incredible stories of hope restored, what's one of your favorite stories of lives transformed?
One story is of Xiao Hui. She is one of Starfish Project's resident chefs and one of the first women to join Starfish Project. She previously worked for an abusive brothel owner and was constantly surrounded by violence. At Starfish Project she works in a healthy environment where people are kind and respectful. She has learned that people can be honest and she has made real friendships.

Xiao Hui loves that coworkers at Starfish Project celebrate her life and achievements. Before working for us she never had a birthday party or was celebrated as an individual, now her birthday is celebrated each year, along with her personal and professional development.

    Affordable Ethical Fashion
    Affordable Ethical Fashion

Affordable ethical fashion is hard to navigate. On the one hand, ethical fashion is going to cost more because each person behind the product is paid a fair wage. As a result, the item costs more to make, so the cost to consumers is going to be higher. This is the way fashion should be...but we're used to cheap fashion. This is where Love Justly comes in.
